THE FLING – *STRANGERS*

To end the year for Anchortapes, I really wanted to record a session with The Fling. And what better way to do it than inviting a bunch of friends in the neighborhood over to participate in the session and, ultimately, get a little drunk.

O’S AND THE OCULIST – *MOW THE LAWN*

O’S AND THE OCULIST – *MOW THE LAWN*

When Jeff Suri asked if a laundromat off Broadway in Long Beach would be a good place to shoot a session, I basically thought “Why not?” After all, there really is no place I couldn’t really shoot. And with Jeff’s odd, yet intriguing songwriting, I couldn’t really argue that any location wasn’t perfect. With [...]

EUGENE & THE 1914 – *TROUBLES*

On an early Saturday afternoon, I cruised straight down Broadway to meet up with Eugene Owens and his band Eugene & the 1914 at guitarist Michael J’s loft in downtown Long Beach. Being the first session I’ve recorded with a band I knew not a single member of (and Eugene being the brother of [...]

FRANCISCO THE MAN! – *DO YOU REMEMBER?*

FRANCISCO THE MAN! – *DO YOU REMEMBER?*

On a 90-plus degree Sunday in Long Beach, I drove out to Riverside, California to meet up with Scotty Cantino and the rest of Francisco The Man!, a band who has sort of dropped off the face of Southern California lately. Pulling down Scotty’s street, the only way I knew which house was his [...]

DEEP SEA DIVER – *WEARING THIN*

Jessica Dobson’s hard work seems to be finally paying off. After years of performing all over Long Beach and the Los Angeles area, heads are finally turning. It’s no secret where some of the attention comes from: Last year, Jessica was asked to play lead guitar on tour with rock mogul and [...]

SO MANY WIZARDS – *LET’S BE FRIENDS*

Nima Kazerouni is a good dude with an enormous amount of talent. Lately, he’s been wasting no time creating his solo project So Many Wizards. With a little reverb, a good amount of distortion, and a lot of experimentation, So Many Wizards gave Nima the opportunity to create a sound no other project he’d [...]

THE FLING – *NOTHING MAKES SENSE*

THE FLING – *NOTHING MAKES SENSE*

The Fling hold a special place in our hearts. Originally from Southern California and now a large part of the Long Beach community, The Fling clear out every mid-twenties music lover’s household on any given night just to hear them play at local dingy venues in the neighborhood.

Luck came our way when we were invited [...]

To end the year for Anchortapes, I really wanted to record a session with The Fling. And what better way to do it than inviting a bunch of friends in the neighborhood over to participate in the session and, ultimately, get a little drunk.

So, the day before we recorded, I hit up Dustin and Graham Lovelis to see if they’d be down to do it, and sure enough, 24 hours later, I had a house party on my hands with a lot of mics set up in my living room.

As you’ll see in these versions of *Strangers* and *Elinor*, though, everyone had a great time, and The Fling sounded as great as they always do. Even if we all were a little drunk.

Thanks to the homies Sayer Danforth and Chad Huff for helping film. And to my girl Rhonda Anjelly for shooting the fujifilm for the session.

The Fling:
Dustin Lovelis – guitar
Graham Lovelis – percussion
Justin Roeland – organ
Justin Ivey – drums

Also playing:
Brett Hendry – pedal steel
Kyle Zantos – banjo
Sam Morgan – banjo
Sean Walker – guitar
Matt Vasquez – weird
